Doom 3 on the other hand showed a progressive change in the levels leading to increased variety. The vast majority of Levels in Quake 4 have a consistent, yet Samey quality throughout. The flashlights alone in Quake4 demonstrate the lack of interest in lighting the devs had. Don't get me wrong, Quake 4's lighting is fine, but the only scenes that really showed complex or intricate lighting design was during the infiltration of the complex and you were on a dark elevator rising through the aircraft hanger.

Outside areas often have a single directional light with a stark black shadow being cast, which not only makes it not look like natural, but also means that outdoor areas looked far darker than they should have. Indoor areas usually have a generic consistent lighting. Since you moved through areas quickly they didn't overburden them with lots of intricate lights, for performance reasons. Quake 4 also suffered from lighting issues because of its scale as well. The ground texture was low resolution, the background image looked pixelated and blurry, and the objects in the distance looked low polygon. Even the very first scene in the game when you wake up looked terrible on day 1. It had large outdoor environments which meant it also had stretched textures and angular landscapes. Quake 4 on the other hand was not, but still used the same engine. The Engine was designed for small, indoor environments with an emphasis on lighting. Doom 3 was designed around the limitations and advantages of the engine. Graphics: In terms of the graphics in each game, Doom 3 still has a large advantage of Quake 4. But I think the higher level Doom 3 weapons are more fun than in Quake 4. I think the lower level weapons in Quake 4 are better than those in Doom 3. I am usually in different moods when I play each one. You can have a preference, but they were designed with different principles in mind. Neither is better, this is an apples and oranges comparison. Enemy damage is also higher, so you can't take as many chances, but in Quake damage is lower and you are meant to boldly charge your enemies. You get less ammo, and you need to be more conservative. Doom 3 weapons are slower and harder to wield because you are often facing a single enemy in a room and the stakes are supposed to be more intense.
#QUAKE 4 GAMES FULL#
That's usually because you are facing rooms full of enemies. Quake 4's action oriented design means the weapons are designed to be switched quickly and burn through ammo. The following are my SUBJECTIVE opinionsĬontrols: They both control differently, but that's because they are different games. Both have lots of strengths and are great experiences made by two of my favorite developers.

I think Doom 3 was a unique game that suffered from being called a doom game, and I think Quake 4 was a generic "by the numbers" title that suffered because it was trying to be a Quake game instead of going its own way. I love both games, and have beaten each of them countless times. Which is fine, but you didn't legitimize it. What you are saying in your post is that You like Quake 4 more, and you want to legitimize that opinion. The fact that you say "Feels" means its a subjective opinion, and not an objective truth. You can't say something is objectively better, and then only give us Subjective examples.įeels faster, slicker and more fun to play
